Reading Table

May 2012 Think of a reading table and you probably think of libraries.

A beautiful, compact reading table with everything you need all in one small, private space. Perhaps it’s an antique reading table in a historic library, or a modern reading table in a contemporary building. The important thing is that a reading table gives you your own private space to enjoy your book and maybe do a bit of writing. When we decide to have a reading table at home we want all of the same features we enjoy in a library, whether our reading table is to be compact and maybe portable, or ample and luxurious.

A reading table needs to provide a clear space to spread our books and documents out, together with good lighting. If a reading table comes with a good light that’s a bonus, and there are also suitable lights available to add later. A compact reading table might work best with an attachable light that can be positioned to leave a good workspace while letting us redirect the beam.

Some kinds of reading table fit next to computer desks and are in the same furniture range. Other readings tables can actually be attached to the computer desk and help remove clutter from around the keyboard. A good reading table for the computer will have a surface that can be angled to let us see the text clearly. This kind of reading table is often used for typing up documents, so it’s important to be able to position it to compare it easily with what’s on screen.

Many of us still like to read before going to sleep, or we doze off while reading, so a reading table that fits beside the bed and can be swung across for use is particularly handy. This sort of reading table works well for traditional books and reading gadgets alike. For print books a good reading table over the bed has enough space for the book, reading glasses, bookmarks and even a pen and paper if you like to make notes. It can double up as a reading table and breakfast-in-bed tray, but remember to wipe it clean before putting your treasured books on it again!

A mobile reading table is also handy beside your favourite chair.  You can keep your latest book and all your accoutrements on this reading table, swing it across when you sit down, and just push it neatly to one side if called away from your book for a while. This kind of reading table is also useful as a desk for writing, so it’s handy for students or if you get inspired to write a bit yourself or to make notes.
